Who we are

We are the data controller for the personal information described in this policy. This policy explains what information we collect when you request a free website check or sign up for our emails, why we collect it, and your rights over it. If you have any questions about this policy or how we use your information, email us at hello@sme-creative.co.uk.

What we collect and why

We use your information to prepare and send your website check, and to follow up about it if you reply or ask us a question. We also use the trade you select, in general terms, to understand which types of business are using our service.

Our lawful basis for this is that you have asked us to carry out the check, so processing your details is a step we take at your request before any possible contract. Where we follow up about your report, we rely on our legitimate interest in responding to enquiries we receive.

We do not collect any special category (sensitive) information, and we do not use your information for automated decision-making or profiling.

Marketing emails and guides

If you tick the box on our form agreeing to receive emails from us, we will use your name and email address to send you occasional tips, guides and offers about websites and running your business online.

Our lawful basis for these emails is your consent. Ticking the box is optional, and you can still get your free website check without it.

You can withdraw your consent at any time by clicking the unsubscribe link at the bottom of any email, or by emailing hello@sme-creative.co.uk. Once you unsubscribe, we will stop sending you marketing emails straight away. We will keep a record of your email address on a suppression list so that we don’t contact you again by mistake.

Who we share your information with

We do not sell, rent or share your personal information with anyone else for their own purposes.

Like most businesses, we use a small number of trusted service providers to run our website and send emails. They store or process your information on our behalf, only on our instructions, and are not allowed to use it for anything else. These are:

  • Website hosting: Hostinger
  • Email: Hostinger
  • Email marketing: Mailchimp

We may also disclose your information if we are required to by law.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

How long we keep your information

We keep the details from your website check request for 12 months after we send your report, so we can answer any follow-up questions. After that we delete them, unless you have become a customer, in which case our customer terms apply.

If you have agreed to receive our emails, we keep your name and email address until you unsubscribe.

How we keep it safe

We store your information securely with our service providers, protect our accounts with strong passwords and two-factor authentication, and limit access to the people who need it to provide our service.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law, you have the right to:

  • ask for a copy of the information we hold about you
  • ask us to correct information that is wrong or incomplete
  • ask us to delete your information
  • ask us to restrict or stop using your information
  • object to us using your information based on our legitimate interests
  • withdraw your consent to marketing emails at any time
  • ask us to transfer your information to another organisation, where this applies

To use any of these rights, email us at hello@sme-creative.co.uk. We will respond within one month and there is no charge.

Cookies

Our website does not use cookies for tracking or advertising. If this changes, we will update this policy and ask for your consent where required.

Complaints

If you are unhappy with how we have used your information, please contact us first at hello@sme-creative.co.uk and we will do our best to put it right.

You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK data protection regulator, at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.
